Tigullio · above Portofino's piazzetta
Castello Brown: the fortress with the finest view over Portofino.
Perched on the hill above the little harbour, Castello Brown has guarded Portofino for centuries. Born as a Genoese military fortress, it was turned into a residence by an English consul in the 19th century. Today it is a museum with a terrace offering the most famous view over the village and the bay.
The story
From Genoese fortress to English residence.
The castle's origins are military: a fortification guarding Portofino bay, part of the Republic of Genoa's defensive system and dedicated to Saint George, patron of the village. For centuries the fort controlled the entrance to the natural harbour, one of the most sheltered on the Riviera.
The turning point came in the 19th century: in 1867 the British consul in Genoa, Montague Yeats-Brown, bought the fortress and turned it into a private residence, giving it the name by which it is still known today. Since then Castello Brown has passed through several owners, always tied to the Anglo-Ligurian community that made Portofino famous among English travellers.
The visit
Museum, gardens and the terrace over the village.
Today Castello Brown is open to the public as a museum and events venue. Inside you can visit the rooms that preserve the atmosphere of the 19th-century residence, with furnishings, photographs and memories of the owners. But the highlight of the visit is the panoramic terrace: from here you enjoy the classic view of Portofino, with the pastel houses arranged in a horseshoe around the little harbour and the moored boats.
The castle is also one of the Riviera's most sought-after venues for weddings and ceremonies, thanks to its gardens and outlook. Hours and tickets vary by season: it is best to check current information before visiting, especially in winter when opening is reduced.
Getting there
A 15-minute climb from the piazzetta.
Castello Brown is reached on foot only, with a climb of about 15 minutes from Portofino's piazzetta. You follow signs for the church of San Giorgio and then for the castle, along a stairway and a path that rises through the vegetation. The route is short but uphill: comfortable shoes recommended.
The same climb continues beyond the castle to the Portofino Lighthouse, at the tip of the promontory. Many visitors combine the two spots in a single scenic walk. Remember that Portofino is reached from Rapallo by train to Santa Margherita and then bus or ferry.
