Tigullio · tip of the Portofino promontory

Portofino Lighthouse: the most romantic walk on the promontory.

At the tip of the Portofino promontory, beyond Castello Brown, a scenic path leads to the lighthouse overlooking the open sea. It is a twenty-minute walk from the piazzetta, with a bar on the rocks at the end: one of the Riviera's best-loved spots for a sunset aperitivo.

The walk

Twenty minutes between greenery and sea, to the point.

The path to the Portofino Lighthouse starts from the village piazzetta and climbs following signs for San Giorgio and Castello Brown. Beyond the castle, the route continues downhill along a paved lane through Mediterranean scrub, with constant glimpses of the open sea and the Tigullio Gulf. In all it is about twenty minutes of walking, easy going, with a few steps.

At the end of the path you reach the tip of the promontory, where the lighthouse stands: a white structure perched over the sea, still working as a navigation signal. It is the furthest point of the Portofino promontory, with the sea on three sides and, on clear days, a view that reaches far.

The lighthouse bar and sunset

One of Liguria's finest sunsets.

Next to the lighthouse is a small bar-restaurant built on the rocks, right over the sea. It is famous for the sunset aperitivo: when the sun sinks towards the horizon, the golden light on the sea and the coast makes this one of the most romantic corners of the Riviera. Arriving in the late afternoon lets you enjoy the walk in the best light and stop for a drink with a view.

The walk to the lighthouse is free and accessible all year. The bar keeps seasonal hours. It is an experience that naturally combines with a visit to Castello Brown, which you pass along the way: many do both in a single outing from the piazzetta.

Getting there

First Portofino, then the path on foot.

The lighthouse is reached on foot only from Portofino's piazzetta: there is no car access. To reach Portofino from Rapallo, the classic route is train to Santa Margherita Ligure (5 minutes), then bus, ferry or the scenic seaside walk to the village. From there you take the path to the castle and the lighthouse.

Practical tip: bring comfortable shoes and, if you go at sunset, a torch or a charged phone for the return, because the path is not lit. The best period runs from spring to autumn, when the days are longer and the bar is open.
