Liguria · 40 min from Rapallo

Genoa: the most underrated city in northern Italy.

The largest medieval historic centre in Europe, UNESCO Palazzi dei Rolli, the Aquarium, Boccadasse and a cultural life nobody expects. 40 minutes by train from Rapallo.

Genoa as you don't expect it

Genoa is Europe's capital of preconceptions: grey, industrial, difficult. Those who actually arrive are surprised. The medieval historic centre is one of the largest in Europe — two hundred narrow lanes (the Caruggi) forming a tight, vertical labyrinth where aristocratic palaces, baroque churches and neighbourhood markets suddenly appear. Nothing is over-restored or artificial: this is a real city with layers of history you can explore entirely on foot.

The Palazzi dei Rolli — aristocratic residences from the 16th–18th century, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2006 — can normally be visited by appointment, but during the Rolli Days (two weekends a year, spring and autumn) they open simultaneously and free of charge. It is one of the most unique cultural events in Italy.

The Porto Antico was redesigned by Renzo Piano: the Genoa Aquarium (one of the largest in Europe), the panoramic Bigo lift, the Galata Museo del Mare. Boccadasse, a few kilometres east of the centre, is the fishing village that refused to go touristy — colourful boats, painted houses, an old-school seafront gelateria, and a pebble beach.

The Musei di Strada Nuova (Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco, Palazzo Doria Tursi) make up one of the most important Old Master painting complexes in northern Italy.
