Vacation in Rapallo from Munich: the smart Italian Riviera.

For Bavarians, Rapallo is the alternative to Garda + Tuscany. More open sea than Garda, more seafront villages than Versilia. Lufthansa flies direct Munich-Genoa in 1h25 (seasonal April-October), then 40 min train to Rapallo. Faster than a weekend on Sylt. Munich-Rapallo in 8h30 by train or 8h30 by car: a practical guide to organising a weekend or longer stay without stress.

By train

Munich-Rapallo: the smartest way

Munich HBF → Verona Porta Nuova (4h30 EuroCity DB-ÖBB) → Milan (1h30) → Rapallo (1h45). 2 changes.

Train is the best option if you don't need a car at destination. In Rapallo, you don't: central FS station, Tigullio trains every 20 minutes, ferries to Portofino from the harbour. Book in advance for the best fares.

By car

Munich-Rapallo: the motorway route

Munich → Innsbruck → Brenner Pass (3h) → Verona (1h30) → A22 Verona-Modena (1h) → A1-A7-A12 Modena-Rapallo (3h)

Once in Rapallo, park the car in the garage and use trains around the Tigullio: with limited parking and the historic-centre ZTL, the car becomes a burden. Why you don't need a car in Liguria.

Comparison

Rapallo vs Croatian coast / Tuscan Versilia: why pick the Tigullio

Croatia: beautiful but more distant with customs; Versilia: sandy beach but limited character. Rapallo: 3h30 door to door from Munich with direct Lufthansa flight, the authentic Italian Riviera, a smart base also for the Cinque Terre.
