Vacation in Rapallo from Zurich: the smart Italian Riviera.
For Ticino residents and German-speaking Swiss, Rapallo is the alternative to Lake Maggiore. Same travel time, but open sea instead of a lake, EuroCity direct train Zurich-Milan, and the Ligurian Riviera instead of the Lombardy coast. Zurich-Rapallo in 5h15 by train or 5h15 by car: a practical guide to organising a weekend or longer stay without stress.
By train
Zurich-Rapallo: the smartest way
Zurich HB → Milan Centrale (3h30 EuroCity direct) → Rapallo (1h45 Frecciarossa or Intercity)
Train is the best option if you don't need a car at destination. In Rapallo, you don't: central FS station, Tigullio trains every 20 minutes, ferries to Portofino from the harbour. Book in advance for the best fares.
By car
Zurich-Rapallo: the motorway route
Zurich → Lugano (via Gotthard, ~3h) → Como → Milan (1h) → A7-A12 Genoa-Rapallo (1h15)
Once in Rapallo, park the car in the garage and use trains around the Tigullio: with limited parking and the historic-centre ZTL, the car becomes a burden. Why you don't need a car in Liguria.

Rapallo vs Lake Garda / Tuscan coast: why pick the Tigullio
