Gulf of Poets · 80 min from Rapallo
Lerici & the Gulf of Poets: Shelley, Byron, the castle and UNESCO Portovenere.
The 13th-century Doria Castle rising above the gulf. The village where Percy Shelley spent his last months. UNESCO Portovenere a 20-minute boat ride away. A day trip worth every minute.
The gulf of the Romantic poets
Lerici is one of the most evocative villages in eastern Liguria: the 13th-century Doria Castle rises directly above the gulf, colourful houses face the water, and the seafront promenade is peaceful — far from the Cinque Terre crowds. The Gulf of Poets owes its name to the English Romantic poets who lived here: Percy Bysshe Shelley spent his final months at San Terenzo (2 km from Lerici) before drowning in 1822; Lord Byron swam from Lerici to Portovenere across the gulf multiple times — an 8 km crossing that some still attempt today.
A few kilometres away lies Portovenere, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with the Cinque Terre: the Church of San Pietro perched on the rocks, colourful palaces along the main street, views over Palmaria Island. Palmaria is reachable by ferry from Portovenere: wild beaches, the Blue Grotto and a permanent population of just a handful of people.
The local Colli di Luni DOC — a Vermentino white wine — is the perfect pairing for the fresh seafood served in Lerici's harbour restaurants.

Logistics
Getting from Rapallo to Lerici.
The train + bus combination is the most comfortable. A car is an option but summer parking in Lerici is challenging.
By train + bus — from Rapallo station, take the Trenitalia regional service to La Spezia Centrale (~60 min, ~€5–7). Then take bus line 11 towards Lerici (~25 min, ~€1.50). Check train timetables at trenitalia.com.
Portovenere is reachable from Lerici by boat (ferry, about 20 minutes) or by bus from La Spezia. If you want to combine both Lerici and Portovenere in one day, take the boat from Lerici — more scenic and faster.
Stay in Rapallo
