Tigullio · 7-min cable car from Rapallo
Montallegro Sanctuary: Rapallo's balcony over the Tigullio Gulf.
612 metres above Rapallo, reached by a scenic cable car in 7 minutes. A sanctuary from 1557, a small Byzantine icon, sailors' ex-votos and, above all, the finest view over the Tigullio, from Portofino to Sestri Levante.
The sanctuary
A 1557 apparition and the heart of the July Festivities.
Montallegro is not just a viewpoint: it is the most identity-defining place in Rapallo.
According to tradition, on 2 July 1557 the Madonna appeared to the farmer Giovanni Chichizola on the hill above Rapallo, leaving a small Byzantine icon as a sign. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montallegro was built on that spot and has been a pilgrimage site for almost five centuries. Still today the July Festivities (1-3 July), the town's best-loved celebration with a procession and fireworks over the sea, mark that very anniversary.
Inside the sanctuary are two things that tell the seafaring soul of the Tigullio: the Byzantine icon of the Madonna, linked to the apparition, and a collection of ex-votos left over the centuries by sailors who survived storms — model ships, small paintings, tokens of thanks. It is an unintentional little museum of Ligurian fishermen's devotion.
Getting up
Cable car, car or on foot: three ways to reach Montallegro.
The cable car is the finest and easiest experience, but all three options have their appeal.
By cable car — the Rapallo cable car climbs to Montallegro from the lower station in via Castagneto, just above the centre. In about 7 minutes it covers 600 metres of elevation with a view that opens progressively over the gulf. It is one of the few cable cars in Liguria and is worth the trip for the panorama during the ascent alone. Check current hours and fares on the cable car's official website, especially in low season when services are reduced.
By car — a winding road connects Rapallo to Montallegro in about 20 minutes, with a car park near the sanctuary. Handy if you continue inland or when the cable car is closed, but the road is narrow and scenic: drive calmly.
On foot — for walkers, a historic mule track climbs from central Rapallo to the sanctuary in about 2 hours. It is the pilgrims' route, uphill but well marked, with glimpses over the gulf. A good option is to walk down and ride up by cable car, or vice versa.
The panorama
The view worth the climb: the whole Tigullio at a glance.
For many visitors the real reason to go up to Montallegro is not the sanctuary but what you see from its terrace.
From Montallegro's 612 metres the eye takes in the entire Tigullio Gulf: to the right the Portofino promontory and the tip of Santa Margherita Ligure, ahead the bay of Rapallo with its seafront and the castle on the sea, to the left the coast stretching towards Chiavari and Sestri Levante. On clear days you can make out the inland mountain profiles and, out to sea, the horizon line over the Ligurian Sea.
It is a perfect spot for sunset and photography, with a bar and a restaurant at the sanctuary to stop at. It pairs well with a day in Rapallo: morning in the centre and along the seafront, afternoon up to Montallegro by cable car, back for an aperitivo in the piazza.
