Portofino Natural Park · by boat or on foot only
San Fruttuoso: the abbey on the sea that you cannot reach by car.
A 12th-century Benedictine abbey built directly on the beach, accessible only by sea or on foot. And at 17 metres depth, the Cristo degli Abissi. From Rapallo via Camogli in about an hour.
Why San Fruttuoso is unique
There are no roads to San Fruttuoso. To get there you take a boat or walk the trail through Portofino Natural Park. This inaccessibility is precisely why the place has remained so intact: a small cove of pebbles and gravel, the green-blue sea of the headland, and at the centre the Abbazia di San Fruttuoso — built in the 11th–12th century by Benedictine monks, later by the Doria family, and now preserved and open to visitors by the FAI (Italy's National Trust).
The abbey is open with a paid entry ticket (check fondoambiente.it for times and prices). It includes the Romanesque cloister, the church, the covered arcade facing the sea and the Doria Tower. The cove and beach are freely accessible.
In front of the cove, at 17 metres depth, lies the Cristo degli Abissi: a bronze statue of Jesus Christ placed in 1954 in memory of sailors lost at sea. In clear water — common in this sheltered stretch of sea — it is visible by snorkelling with mask and fins. It is one of the most iconic underwater sites in the Mediterranean.
Bear in mind: the cove is small and can get very crowded on summer weekends. The best visit is in the morning (arriving on the first ferry) or in late spring / early autumn.
Pair it with
- Camogli — ferry departure point, beautiful village in its own right
- Portofino — ferry from Portofino (~10 min), a great combination
- Punta Chiappa — rocky promontory reachable via trail from San Rocco
- Recco — focaccia col formaggio IGP before or after
Ideal itinerary: train Rapallo–Camogli, morning ferry to San Fruttuoso (abbey + swim + Cristo degli Abissi), return to Camogli in the afternoon, late lunch in Recco. A full day, no rushing.
