Golfo Paradiso · 20 min from Rapallo
Camogli: the most photographed village in Liguria, and there is a reason for that.
Coloured facades five storeys high rising directly from the sea, a dark pebble beach, a fishing harbour and the ferry to San Fruttuoso. Twenty minutes by train from Rapallo.
What makes Camogli different
The feature that sets Camogli apart from every other Ligurian coastal village is its houses: five or six storeys tall, painted in ochre, yellow, brick red and green, arranged in a semicircle around the small fishing harbour. These are not the low cottages typical of coastal villages — they are real palaces that seem almost ready to fall into the sea. The contrast with the dark pebble beach and the blue of the bay creates a chromatic effect that few places in the world can match.
Beyond the facades, Camogli has a very pleasant seafront promenade, the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta (medieval origins, Baroque façade), the Castello della Dragonara on the rocks, and dozens of seafood trattorias and restaurants concentrated in the historic centre.
The harbour is the starting point for two of the finest excursions in the bay:
- Ferry to San Fruttuoso — a 12th-century Benedictine abbey accessible only by sea or on foot, one of the most scenic spots in Liguria.
- Punta Chiappa — a wild promontory reachable on foot from San Rocco (40 min) or by boat from Camogli.
Pair it with
- San Fruttuoso — ferry from Camogli, 20 minutes, abbey on the sea
- San Rocco di Camogli — viewpoint at 400 m, 40 min on foot from Camogli
- Punta Chiappa — by boat from Camogli or on foot from San Rocco
- Recco — 10 min, focaccia col formaggio IGP
- Sagra del Pesce — 2nd Sunday in May
- Stella Maris — August, candles on the sea
Recommended itinerary: morning in Camogli (centre and harbour), lunch in Recco (focaccia), afternoon ferry to San Fruttuoso, return to Rapallo in the evening.
Getting there
How to reach Camogli from Rapallo.
In summer the train is clearly preferable to the car: parking in Camogli is very limited and the nearest car parks are a 15-minute walk from the centre.
By train — from Rapallo station, Trenitalia regional service on the Genoa–La Spezia line, stopping at Camogli–San Fruttuoso. About 20 minutes, ticket ~€2–3. The station is a 5-minute walk from the harbour and the historic centre. Check timetables on trenitalia.com or the Trenitalia app.
By car — SS1 (Aurelia) coast road via Recco, about 20 minutes. In summer there can be queues. Parking in the centre is very limited. A practical alternative: park in Recco (free, near the station) and take the train to Camogli (8 min).
Ferry to San Fruttuoso — the Golfo Paradiso service departs from Camogli harbour several times a day (in summer every 30–60 minutes approximately). Crossing time: 20 minutes. Check updated timetables at golfoparadiso.it.
Events in Camogli
Two unique fixtures in the calendar.
Camogli hosts two of the most distinctive festivals in Liguria: one is loud and gastronomic, the other is silent and luminous.
The Sagra del Pesce takes place every year on the second Sunday of May and is one of the most famous gastronomic events in Liguria: a 4-metre frying pan is used to fry fresh fish on the beach, distributed free to all those present. The atmosphere is festive, the village is packed and colourful.
Stella Maris (August) is the opposite in terms of atmosphere: at sunset, thousands of floating candles are launched onto the sea in honour of the Madonna who protects sailors. The visual result — the bay lit by moving pinpoints of light — is among the most evocative sights on the Riviera di Levante.
