Tigullio · getting around car-free
The Tigullio without a car, from Rapallo.
In the Tigullio a car is often a burden: narrow roads, Portofino's limited-traffic zone, pricey parking that vanishes in summer. The good news is you do not need one. Regional trains, ferries and a cable car connect almost everything, and Rapallo is the central hub. Here is how to get around without ever getting behind the wheel.
Rapallo is one of Liguria's handiest bases for car-free travel: the station is in the centre, the ferry harbour and the cable car are a few minutes' walk away. Everything starts here: the coast east and west by train, the promontory villages by boat, the sanctuary by cable car. Here are the modes and destinations, with rough costs and seasonal tips.
The selection
The Tigullio without a car: modes and destinations.
The regional train, the backbone
The Genoa-La Spezia line stops at Rapallo every 15-30 minutes and links the whole coast: Santa Margherita, Zoagli, Chiavari, Lavagna and Sestri Levante to the east; Camogli, Recco and Genoa to the west. Tickets 2-8 EUR, journeys of 5-40 minutes. The most practical and cheapest option.
The ferries to Portofino and San Fruttuoso
From Rapallo harbour the Tigullio Maritime Service reaches Santa Margherita, Portofino, San Fruttuoso and Camogli. San Fruttuoso, with its abbey on the sea, can only be reached by boat or on foot: the ferry is the natural way. Sailings are most frequent from spring to early autumn.
The bus to Portofino
Portofino has a limited-traffic zone and in summer a car is banned or useless. The ATP bus (line 782) links Santa Margherita to Portofino in about 20 minutes along a scenic road. Otherwise, the ferry. Either way, no parking stress.
The cable car up to Montallegro
From central Rapallo the cable car climbs 600 metres to the Montallegro Sanctuary in 7 minutes, no car needed. Gulf panorama, trails and a Marian sanctuary. One of the most scenic ways to gain height straight from the sea.
Genoa by train and metro
Genoa is 30-40 minutes by train from Rapallo. In the city the metro, buses and public lifts take you everywhere: Porto Antico, aquarium, old town and Nervi. A big city to enjoy entirely without a car.
The Cinque Terre by train
The Cinque Terre are the car-free destination par excellence: the villages are traffic-limited and the train linking them stops right in each one. From Rapallo you change at Sestri Levante or Monterosso. The Cinque Terre Card covers trains and trails.

Tickets, timetables and tips
Buy the regional ticket at the station (machines or the Trenitalia app); depending on the fare it must be validated or is valid for a set time. For several trips in a day to the Cinque Terre the Cinque Terre Card is worth it, covering unlimited trains on the route and the trails. The Tigullio Maritime Service ferries run to seasonal timetables: more sailings from June to September, reduced in winter, so always check the day's schedule.
Practical tip: in summer the train and ferry beat the car on every route, between the traffic zone, full car parks and queues. Rapallo, with station, harbour and cable car all a short walk apart, is the ideal base for a completely car-free holiday. And returning in the evening to a home with a kitchen, like Rapallo Smart Home, rounds off the day nicely.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions.
Can you visit the Tigullio without a car?
Absolutely. The regional train on the Genoa-La Spezia line links the whole coast every 15-30 minutes, ferries reach Portofino and San Fruttuoso and a cable car climbs to Montallegro. Rapallo, with station, harbour and cable car in the centre, is the ideal base for it.
How do you get to Portofino without a car?
Two ways: the ATP bus line 782 from Santa Margherita (about 20 minutes) or the ferry from Rapallo or Santa Margherita harbour. Portofino has a limited-traffic zone and in summer a car is banned or useless, so bus and ferry are the best choice.
How do you reach San Fruttuoso?
San Fruttuoso cannot be reached by car: only by sea, by ferry from Rapallo, Santa Margherita, Portofino or Camogli, or on foot along the promontory trails. The ferry is the easiest way, with sailings most frequent from spring to early autumn.
Is the Cinque Terre Card worth it?
If you plan several train hops between the Cinque Terre villages in a day, yes: it covers unlimited regional trains on the route and access to the trails. From Rapallo you reach the area by train with a change at Sestri Levante or Monterosso.
Who is Rapallo Smart Home for?
For couples, families or small groups up to 4 guests who want a car-free holiday: the station, ferry harbour and cable car are minutes away, and the full kitchen lets you return in the evening and dine at home.
