How to reach Portofino from Rapallo: all ways, real costs and times.
Portofino has no railway station. You always reach it via Santa Margherita Ligure, 5 minutes by train from Rapallo. From SML you have three options: bus, boat or panoramic walk along the sea. Which one to choose? It depends on the season, budget and what you want from the experience.
Mandatory first step
The Rapallo → Santa Margherita Ligure train.
Whatever the final means of transport for Portofino, the first step is always the train. Five minutes, two euros, frequency every 20-30 minutes.
The Santa Margherita Ligure station is officially called "Santa Margherita Ligure-Portofino", even though Portofino is another 5-6 km away. Buy the ticket at the station, automatic machine or Trenitalia app. Remember to validate paper tickets. From SML station to the port area (where buses and boats depart) is 8 minutes on foot through the centre.
Option 1 · Most scenic
By boat: 15 minutes of Ligurian coast from the sea.
The most evocative way to reach Portofino. You see the village appear from the water just as the first navigators discovered it.
How it works. From SML station follow signs to "Porto" (8 min walk). At the dock you find the Tigullio Trasporti Marittimi kiosk. Buy ticket, board the motor boat at scheduled departure. The crossing skirts Paraggi Bay and arrives at Portofino's small harbour. Check updated timetables at traghettiportofino.it.
When it's worth it. Mid-April to October. In winter and with rough sea the service is reduced or suspended. Ideal if travelling with elderly people, small children or simply wanting to enjoy the panorama. Best taken at evening return for sunset over the sea.
Option 2 · Cheapest
By bus: 30 minutes for a few euros.
The low-cost choice, reliable year-round. ATP bus along the panoramic provincial road.
How it works. The bus stop is in front of SML station, on the main road. Look for the ATP line to Portofino. Ticket from tobacconist or bar before boarding (more expensive on board). 30 minutes journey on narrow and panoramic provincial road, with curves and a few hairpin bends crossing Paraggi before Portofino.
When it's worth it. Always, except during summer peaks when traffic can double the times. Best choice for families on a budget or off-season visitors. Some strike days or special events may suspend service: always check updated schedules at atpesercizio.it.
Option 3 · Most memorable
On foot: 45-60 minutes on the panoramic trail.
The walk from Santa Margherita to Portofino is considered one of Italy's most beautiful. Paved road and well-maintained paths along cliffs and Liberty villas.
The route. Starts from SML port, follows the seafront walkway east, passes Punta Pedale, skirts Paraggi Bay (recommended swim stop in summer), then climbs slightly to Portofino. Along the way: early 1900s Liberty villas, rocks with sea access, continuous photographic vantage points.
What you need. Comfortable shoes (sneakers or sports), water, hat in summer. Not a demanding trek but a walk. Suitable for anyone who walks regularly. Children aged 6-7+ handle it well.
Local tip. Walk one way (morning, best light for photos) and return by boat or bus in the afternoon when tired. Perfect combination of experience and practicality.
Not recommended
By car: why to avoid it (especially in summer).
Technically possible but the worst option for many practical reasons.
The 227 provincial road from SML to Portofino is narrow, winding, with blind curves and very few overtaking points. In high season traffic is constant both ways. Portofino Municipality regulates accesses with temporary ZTL and entry tickets at peak hours. Parking is scarce, expensive and often full.
The only situation where a car makes sense: arriving very early in the morning (before 8) off-season (November-March) and returning in the afternoon. In all other conditions, the train+other transport combo is always faster, cheaper and less stressful.
