Giornate di Chiavari

Squares, historic palaces and an entire city that becomes a cultural stage. Talks, concerts, films, poetic trekking and performances: Chiavari is the Tigullio's most culturally active city, and every late May it proves it.

What it is and why it is worth the trip

Chiavari is not a town you pass through. It has a precise character: its medieval arcaded streets stretching for kilometres, the compact and lived-in historic centre, the covered market that smells of real Liguria. And since a distributed cultural festival began filling its squares, Chiavari has found the best way to tell its story — not as a postcard tourist destination, but as a place where culture genuinely happens.

The Giornate di Chiavari grew from the tradition of the Festival della Parola, which Helena Molinari had built with patience and vision over ten years — from 2013 to 2023 — bringing writers, philosophers and Italian cultural figures face to face with the Chiavari and Tigullio public. In 2025 the format was renewed, with the artistic direction of Massimiliano Finazzer Flory — actor, director and intellectual with a long history of distributed festivals combining art and thought.

The 2026 theme is "How good it is to be in Chiavari": four days, from 30 May to 2 June, with events extending into the following weeks in summer and autumn. The distributed format is the key strength: there is no single venue, but the whole city. Squares, loggias, historic palaces, internal courtyards. Culture steps out of institutional containers and mingles with the everyday life of the historic centre.

The programme mixes literary talks and debates with concerts, film screenings, poetic trekking in the surrounding hills and evening performances. This is not a festival for insiders only: it is designed for the curious, for those who love to listen and walk, for those who want a weekend with more layers of meaning than just the beach.

Origin Heir to the Festival della Parola (2013–2023), the renewed festival has been directed by Massimiliano Finazzer Flory since 2025.

What to expect in practice

A long weekend at the end of May: the perfect moment for the Riviera del Levante. The weather is mild, the sea is already swimmable, and the August crowds have not yet arrived. The days lend themselves to a pleasant rhythm: free morning to explore Chiavari — the arcades, the market, the seafront — and afternoon packed with events. In the evening the city comes alive in bars and squares, with the natural continuation of conversations started at the talks.

Those staying in Rapallo can easily combine the festival with a trip towards Portofino or Sestri Levante, which are equidistant. The train is the key: in 15 minutes you are in Chiavari for the first afternoon event, in 30 you are in Genoa if you want to extend the evening.

The smart choice

Why stay in Rapallo rather than Chiavari

Rapallo is 15 minutes by train, but offers what Chiavari cannot always guarantee during the festival: availability, reasonable prices and a holiday that extends well beyond the single event.

1

Better availability and prices

During the festival, accommodation in Chiavari's centre fills quickly. Rapallo offers a far wider choice and generally more stable prices, especially for multi-night stays.

2

The Tigullio as your base

From Rapallo you reach by train not just Chiavari, but also Camogli, Recco, Santa Margherita Ligure and Sestri Levante. The festival is a gateway to the whole Riviera del Levante.

3

Late May in Rapallo is magical

Late spring is one of the most beautiful moments on the Riviera: the sea is already warm, flowers are in bloom, the August crowds have not yet arrived. The festival pairs perfectly with sunny days and coastal walks.

4

Portofino within reach

From Rapallo or Santa Margherita, Portofino is reachable by boat or on foot. Adding half a day at Portofino during your stay is the Tigullio's most popular combination.

5

A peaceful return

After an evening at the festival, coming back by train to Rapallo is simple and stress-free. A smart home to return to silence and comfort after a day of cultural events.

6

Total flexibility

If the festival programme does not appeal on a given day, Rapallo offers alternatives: the cable car to Montallegro, the sea castle, an aperitivo on the seafront, the Portofino Park trails.

Rapallo and surroundings during the festival

What to do before and after the events.

Late May leaves time for much more than the festival. Some concrete ideas for getting the most out of the Riviera.

Morning

Chiavari's arcades and market

Arrive in Chiavari early in the morning when the medieval arcades are still quiet. The covered market is one of the finest in Liguria: local produce, flowers, cheeses. An hour before the festival's first event.

Day off

Portofino and San Fruttuoso

Ferries to Portofino and San Fruttuoso leave from Santa Margherita — 5 minutes by train from Rapallo. A day at these two gems of the Portofino Park pairs perfectly with the festival stay.

Evening

Aperitivo on Rapallo's seafront

Return from the festival and stroll along Lungomare Vittorio Veneto at sunset. Rapallo's sea castle is one of the finest backdrops in Liguria for an evening aperitivo.

Trekking

Portofino Park trails

Late May is ideal for walking: cool temperatures, flowers in bloom. The path from Rapallo to Portofino (about 3–4 hours) offers views over the gulf that are hard to forget.
