Golfo Paradiso · 8 min from Rapallo

Recco: the focaccia col formaggio IGP that is worth the trip.

Not a picturesque village — an unmatched gastronomic experience: focaccia col formaggio di Recco IGP, historic restaurants open since 1860, and the gateway to the Golfo Paradiso. Eight minutes by train from Rapallo.

What Recco is really like

Recco was almost completely razed to the ground by Allied bombing in 1944 — among the heaviest strikes on any Italian town of that size — and rebuilt in the postwar years. Do not expect ancient alleyways or a picturesque historic centre: Recco is a modern, functional town with no particular architectural appeal.

The reason to stop here is one, but it is excellent: focaccia col formaggio di Recco IGP. Ultra-thin layers of unleavened pastry (almost translucent) filled with fresh crescenza or stracchino cheese, baked in a wood-fired or very high-temperature oven. The result is crisp on the surface, creamy inside. You will not find anything comparable outside Recco and its immediate surroundings.

The two historic restaurants are the definitive reference points:

  • Manuelina — open since 1885, five generations of the same family, large dining room and summer garden.
  • Da O Vittorio — an active historic restaurant on Via Roma, traditional Ligurian cooking with focaccia col formaggio at the centre.

Both require a booking at weekends and in summer. Avoid the waterfront bars for focaccia: the takeaway version is not comparable to the proper restaurant experience.

Pair it with

  • Camogli — 10 minutes by car, the most beautiful village in the Golfo Paradiso
  • San Fruttuoso — ferry from Camogli, medieval abbey on the sea
  • San Rocco di Camogli — viewpoint over the bay, 40 minutes on foot from Camogli
  • Sagra del Fuoco — 6–8 September, spectacular fireworks
  • Festa della Focaccia — May, tastings and workshops

Recommended combination: Recco for lunch (focaccia), Camogli in the afternoon for the seafront walk and sunset.
